The dunes have instilled in me a love of nature, and a desire to protect it as much as I can. Melli Hoppe, Board President

Even though most of our dunes are federally protected, there is still much work to be done to restore critical native habitat, protect our waters from pollution, and the battle to maintain the public trust. We hope that you will join us at the forefront of protecting the Indiana dunes and Lake Michigan through Membership today. Together, we will find balanced solutions to complex problems that honor the lands and waters we love.

What does it mean to become a Save the Dunes Member and how does it help? Here's how.

1. Advocacy. Your membership directly supports Save the Dunes’ ability to be a responsive leader to existing and emerging threats to our region’s natural areas. Using persuasive advocacy tools such as community training opportunities, listening forums, policy and permit review, legal action, and more, Save the Dunes proposes meaningful solutions to advance the dunes and Lake Michigan’s ongoing protection. Without your Membership, these efforts would not be possible.

2. Legal Standing. When all other efforts have been exhausted and legal action is the only solution, we are prepared to represent the interests of the dunes and Lake Michigan in court. Membership provides legal standing – demonstrating that Save the Dunes’ interests to protect area lands and water are supported by a number of individuals and families who share that same interest. If we've learned anything over the years, it's that no victory is permanent. Recent examples include efforts in court to defend the public trust, ensuring the public’s right to freely use the Lake Michigan shoreline for recreation. Sadly, the public trust continues to be challenged – a firm reminder that we must remain vigilant in our efforts.

3. Vote on Board Leadership. Save the Dunes’ members have the privilege to influence the direction, decision-making, and activities undertaken by the organization through the ability to vote on the organization’s Board of Directors. Members are encouraged to attend the December annual meeting to vote on Board leadership and to learn more about programmatic efforts and how to get involved. Save the Dunes Members will receive an invitation and more information on the December meeting in the coming months.

We hope that you will join us at the forefront of protecting the Indiana dunes and Lake Michigan through Membership today!
